The #1 New York Style Pizza in Maryland, According to the Washington Post

Last week, we reported on the growing popularity of “Maryland Style Pizza” in New York City. In this article, we turn our focus back to our area as we look at the Washington Post’s top-ranked New York Style pizza restaurant in Maryland.

In September, the Washington Post “analyzed 7.5 million Yelp reviews and developed a formula” to identify the best regional style pizza in each state. As with any list, there are bound to be differing opinions, but according to The Washington Post, Angeli’s in Baltimore has claimed the title of the best New York Style pizza in Maryland.

Angeli’s began in 1986 in New Orleans, Louisiana before moving to Baltimore more recently. It was described on the Angeli’s website as a small restaurant in a vibrant neighborhood with a goal to provide its community with delicious food, cooked fresh daily. The restaurant was forced to close in the New Orleans area when Hurricane Katrina hit, but returned in Baltimore in 2019. Now, there are five locations in the Baltimore area.

Angeli’s specializes in customizable New York-style pizza, featuring a range of options such as chicken pesto and marinated chicken breast toppings, in addition to more traditional pizza toppings. The menu includes house-marinated wings, calzones, fresh salads, and a variety of sandwiches– including meatball, Italian, chicken, grilled cheese, portobello mushroom, and more.

We always make sure to sample a classic plain pizza to evaluate the fundamentals of crust, sauce, and cheese. Both of our team members found the pizza enjoyable, noting that it evoked memories of Potomac Pizza and Mamma Lucia, two local favorites with multiple locations nearby. Angeli’s wows locals too, earning a 4.7 /5 rating with nearly 2000 reviews on Google and a 4.5 on Yelp with more than 400 reviews. Photos below:
