Additional Cold Weather Advisory in Effect Until Thursday Morning

An additional Cold Weather Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS). The initial Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7pm this evening until 10am tomorrow. The additional advisory goes into effect at 10pm on Tuesday until 10am Thursday.

Per the NWS, “For the first Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 5 below expected. For the second Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 10 below expected. Portions of DC, central, northeast, and northern Maryland, and central, northern, and northwest Virginia.

For the first Cold Weather Advisory, from 7 PM this evening to 10 AM EST Tuesday. For the second Cold Weather Advisory, from 10 PM Tuesday to 10 AM EST Thursday. The cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. Wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with
prolonged exposure. Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure.

Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure
portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.”

Anything wet will freeze tonight and could lead to some icy conditions in the morning to go along with bitter cold. It wouldn’t be a shock if some area school systems choose to delay, but we will monitor local conditions as temps begin to drop later today.
