Montgomery Parks to Suspend Portion of Sligo Creek Open Parkway on Fridays Beginning Jan. 24

Suspension aims to alleviate traffic impacts at the intersection of Sligo Creek Parkway and Piney Branch Road resulting from Purple Line construction.

Montgomery Parks is modifying the operating hours for the 1.1-mile southern portion of the Sligo Creek Open Parkway between Old Carroll Avenue and Piney Branch Road, to help alleviate traffic congestion resulting from the ongoing construction of the Maryland Transit Administration’s (MTA) Purple Line Light Rail Project. This portion of the open parkway will be suspended indefinitely on Fridays beginning on Friday, January 24, 2025, until Purple Line construction is substantially completed.

The suspension is anticipated to last two years. Sligo Creek Parkway will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists on Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. through normal operating hours on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. (during fall and winter months) and 6:00 p.m. (during spring and summer months).

The northern section of the Open Parkway between Forest Glen Road and University Boulevard will maintain the original operating hours, starting at 9:00 am on Friday.

The Sligo Creek Trail is expected to remain open for most of the construction, but some short-term closures are planned for trail improvements. Please follow detours and avoid closed segments of the trail.
