Veteran Washington DC area journalist and host Tony Perkins has returned to NBC4 following successful prostate cancer surgery. Perkins recently announced that his surgery was successful and that he would be returning to NBC4 Monday morning.
For more than 30 years, Perkins has been part of the DC media scene as a weatherman, reporter, host and news anchor on both television and radio. He jointed NBC4 in 2023 to anchor News4 Today.
Perkins was raised in the DMV, where he attended schools in Prince George’s and Fairfax counties before going on to study communications and cinema studies at American University. He began his career as a stand-up comedian in DC’s comedy club scene, spending nine years performing at clubs, colleges, and theaters nationwide.
His comedic talent opened the door to a position on Donnie Simpson’s top-rated morning radio show on WKYS, which was broadcast from NBC4 studios at the time. Following that, he hosted “DC20 Breakaway,” a role that earned him an Emmy Award. He then transitioned to FOX5, where he served as the morning weatherman and feature reporter.
Back in September, Perkins shared the news of his diagnosis on NBC4 and through social media. On social media he wrote the following:
“Hey friends. Some of you may have just heard me talk about this on the radio. Earlier this summer I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I feel good and my cancer is considered “low risk”. I have a great doctor and I know I’m going to be fine.
Fortunately, my cancer was caught early, because I get regular physicals. And caught early, prostate cancer is one of those cancers that can be treated. It doesn’t have to kill you. Most men should talk to their doctor at age 50 about possibly being screened.
Initial screening is a blood (PSA) test, and a digital exam. African American men tend to get diagnosed later and can have worse outcomes. So we should talk to our doctor by age 45. Any man who has had a close family member with prostate cancer should consider getting screened at 40. If you’re not sure, talk with your doctor or urologist. Guys: it is very important we take care of ourselves. I’m so glad I’ve caught mine early. And THANK YOU in advance for your prayers & well wishes. I am going to be fine!”
Update: My prostate cancer surgery was successful. Praise God! THANK YOU SO MUCH for your prayers and well wishes. I appreciate it so much. Now it’s recovery time. Oh, and, GO COMMANDERS! ❤️🙏🏾😊🏈 pic.twitter.com/YQrthQpO6l
