Extreme Cold Alert and Wind Advisory Issued

An Extreme Cold Alert and Wind Advisory has been issued for Montgomery. The cold alert goes from 7:00 pm Tuesday, 01/28 until 9:00 am Wednesday, 01/29 while the wind advisory is in effect from 11am-6pm on Wednesday.

Per the National Weather Service, “West winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected for portions of DC, central, north central, northeast, and northern Maryland, and northern Virginia. Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.”

An Extreme Cold Alert is issued when temperatures and/or wind chill values are expected to be at or below 32 degrees. Per Alert Montgomery, “There is always particular concern for children, seniors, homeless individuals and animals during periods of extreme cold.

  • Neighbors, friends or family members should check on the elderly, especially a senior living alone. Older people are particularly susceptible to hypothermia, even inside their homes and may need assistance.
  • Children engaged in outdoor activities should be carefully monitored by a responsible adult
  • Everyone spending time outside should dress appropriately to protect against the cold
  • Montgomery County provides a variety of sheltering opportunities for the homeless. Call the police non-emergency line, 301-279-8000 if an individual appears to be in danger.
  • Animals should not be left outside unattended.  See more information about animal care below.
  • Residents in need of a place to warm up can visit County facilities such as libraries or recreation centers, or ride a Ride On bus, during normal operating hours.”
