Sangfroid Distilling, a small artisan distillery focused on fruit-based brandies, rye whiskey, and dutch-style gins, has received its permit to build out its expanded location in Takoma Park.
Started by two brothers-in-law, Sangfroid Distilling is “driven to produce authentic spirits, inspired by European and early American tradition, that use the best ingredients we can find growing near us.” Sangfroid is currently located at 5130 Baltimore Ave. in Hyattsville.
The upcoming expansion will bring the distiller to a historic former bank building located at 6950 Carroll Avenue in Takoma Park. Maryland Newsletters reported that Sangfroid obtained a permit valued at $642,722 for renovations, and the company purchased the building back in 2023 for $1.75 million.
Earlier this month, Sangfroid Distilling shared the following on its Facebook page: “Holy [sh*t], we finally got it. Permit came through today from Montgomery County to build out our expanded location in TKPK. Things are happening, folks.”
More from Sangfroid Distilling: “For our seasonal brandies, we use heirloom fruit from our own orchard in western Maryland, we forage for wild fruit, and we also purchase fruit from Maryland and Pennsylvania farms (the longest distance the fruit travels is about 120 miles). We only use whole fruit, and all our fruit is fermented naturally using only the ambient yeasts on the skins of the fruit. For the most part, the fruit we used is unsprayed (or minimally sprayed, to the extent possible). Unsprayed and wild fruit, like the apples and pears below, often look much different than fruit at the grocery store or market, but they invariably have superior flavor and make fantastic brandy.”
