National Weather Service: ‘Limited’ Ice Accumulation Threat For Entire Region Mid-Week

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a ‘limited’ ice accumulation threat for the entire region on Thursday, February 6th.

The threat is at the “limited” level right now because it’s not until mid-week and it’s still Saturday. As always, models aren’t in full agreement over what’s going to happen, so for now it’s just something to keep an eye on.

The latest run of the GFS shows sleet entering the area Wednesday afternoon and turning to freezing rain overnight before ending as rain later on Thursday. It does show significant ice accumulation that would cause plenty of issues in the area. The latest run of the Euro shows a lot less precipitation with more rain than ice. For now it’s something to monitor, and if things get more serious we’ll continue to update.

Per the National Weather Service forecaster’s discussion: “A weak UL wave and associated sfc low pressure will move through Wednesday. Depending on timing and arrival of WAA/isentropic precip, there could be a light wintry mix primarily in the form of ZR [freezing rain] near the Mason-Dixon and in any cooler pockets that hold cold air. This should changeover to rain for most through the day. Still some uncertainties on when precip exactly starts, which lowers confidence on wintry precip. Wednesday will be cooler with highs close to climo for the northern half of the CWA.
