“Some school delays can’t be ruled out Thursday morning” As Ice Event Looms

The National Weather Service (NWS) has expanded the area listed under “Elevated ice accumulation” area on its latest ‘Threat Risk’ map (available below) to include a good portion of Maryland and Virginia.

As we noted in this morning’s update, the ‘elevated’ risk means, “up to one quarter inch of ice accumulation will create dangerous travel conditions and likely result in power outages.” while the ‘limited’ risk means, “a light glaze of ice could cause hazardous travel conditions on bridges, overpasses, and untreated or secondary roads.”

The NWS has released an ice forecast map (featured photo) that shows a tenth to a quarter inch of ice in upper Montgomery County, most of Howard County, Frederick County, Carroll County, and some other surrounding areas. The Capital Weather Gang wrote “Some school delays can’t be ruled out Thursday morning.”

Warmer temps today and Tuesday are expected to drop on Wednesday with icy precipitation possible late Wednesday into Thursday morning. Temperatures are expected to warm up on Thursday, but it will be a matter of when as the morning now looks like it could be slick– especially the further north you go.
