A warm start to Tuesday may make you question the potential ice event that’s headed our way late Wednesday into Thursday, but temperatures are expected to drop as we head into tomorrow with the National Weather Service (NWS) increasing the totals on its latest ‘Expected Ice Accumulation’ map.
The wintry mix is expected to begin on Wednesday evening and continue into Thursday morning. I would expect the NWS to post alerts (likely an Advisory) at some point today for what’s to come with a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch of ice forecasted for areas like Montgomery, Howard, Frederick, Loudoun, and other surrounding counties including a some of DC.
Temperatures should get above freezing late Thursday morning, so the difference between a delay and a closure would likely be the timing of the temps going up. If sleet and freezing rain fall as expected, there will certainly be delays and closures across the DMV. We’ll continue to monitor.
