National Weather Service Projected Snow Totals For Tuesday/Wednesday Storm

The National Weather Service (NWS) has released the latest projected snow totals maps for the potential storm on Tuesday heading into Wednesday. We still expect a Winter Storm Watch to be issued at some point today or as late as tomorrow morning.

The late morning/early afternoon runs of the GFS (American model) and the Euro (European model) went just a bit south, continuing the windshield wiper effect we’ve seen with this storm the last few days. There is plenty of time and room for this to continue to shift, and a move just 50 miles in either direction could be the difference between 1-3 inches and 6-8 inches.

Right now, the NWS thinks it’s likely we will get 4 inches for much of the area. This includes all of Montgomery County, DC, Frederick County, Howard County, Prince George’s County and other surrounding counties in Northern Virginia. The ‘High End Amount’ map shows 7 inches area-wide (10% chance), while the ‘Low End Amount’ map shows less than an inch for most of the area (10% chance). All maps available below.

The Euro starts the storm a little later on Tuesday afternoon, so right now start time seems to be anywhere between noon and 4pm on Tuesday and the storm would continue into Wednesday morning. Remember that things change and there are a lot of possible outcomes (some more likely than others). As we move closer, we’ll continue to provide updates.
