‘Significant Snow Risk’ Ahead of Potential Winter Storm on Tuesday

We fully expect Winter Storm Watches to be issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) later today ahead of Tuesday’s potential storm. Last night’s model runs increased projected snow totals and much of the immediate area is now in the ‘significant snow risk’ category.

The NWS defines the ‘significant’ snow risk category as: “Heavy snow and/or sleet accumulation will result in widespread travel disruptions.” Both the GFS (American model) and the Euro (European model) brought the snow further north in the latest model runs late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

As we mentioned in our last update, we previously went from a potential snow event of 6+ inches to almost no snow Friday night, back to some snow, and now what looks like a Warning level event for our area. The upcoming runs later this morning/early this afternoon will be important in confirming the northern shift in moisture that we saw in these runs.

As of now the storm is expected to start during the day Tuesday possibly around noon, though that is subject to change. The latest maps from the National Weather Service (all available below) now show 4 inches of snow expected through 7am Wednesday morning with the ‘high end amount’ at 7 inches area wide and the ‘low end amount’ at less than an inch area wide. The last map shows that there is a 52% chance at more than 4 inches of snow by Wednesday morning. Stay tuned, an update is coming this afternoon.
