School Closure and Delay Predictions For Wednesday, Feb. 12

With the first very light flakes starting to fall and a Winter Storm Warning in effect for much of the area until 7am Wednesday morning, many are wondering what kind of impact this will have on schools tomorrow.

This storm is a little different than what we’re used to, with heavier snow expected south of DC and less snow expected the further north you go. The National Weather Service (NWS) is expecting about 3-5 inches for the immediate area, according to its latest update, and if that amount was to fall it would certainly have an impact on schools.

In addition to the ‘Expected Snowfall’ map in the featured photos, below we’ve included maps below that show the percent chance of more than 2 inches (~85-90% chance), more than 4 inches (~50-60% chance), and more than 6 inches (~10-24% chance) of snow.

Pencil Prediction: 4 Pencils ✏️✏️✏️✏️ (rating chart available below). There’s a very good chance we see schools close for much of the area. If three or more inches fall with snow continuing into Wednesday morning, I don’t see schools opening. The reason we are not at five pencils is because there is bust potential with this storm. If 1-2 inches fall and it stops snowing early enough, there’s a chance schools don’t close. With all that said, 4 pencils is 4 pencils and MCPS has stated that a decision on Wednesday would be made by 7pm on Tuesday evening.
