Armand’s Pizza Celebrates 50th Anniversary

This year we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Armand’s, the local chain that captured the hearts– and appetites– of pizza lovers across the DC Metro area. Founded in 1975, Armand’s began as a humble pizzeria on Veazey Street and Wisconsin Avenue NW near Tenley Circle in Washington, D.C., and quickly blossomed into a beloved institution. At its peak, the chain boasted over 25 locations, including multiple restaurants right here in Montgomery County. Today, however, only two family-owned locations remain: the Rockville restaurant (190 Halpine Rd.) and “Armand’s By the Sea” in Bethany Beach, DE.

The man behind the legacy, Lew Newmyer, was inspired to bring deep-dish pizza to the DC area after a memorable trip to Chicago. His passion for pizza led him to open the first Armand’s, where he perfected a DMV version of a Chicago-style pizza recipe that would become a staple in the area.

The Newmyer family, long-time residents of Montgomery County, played a significant role in the chain’s growth, operating several locations until the closure of their last restaurant in Silver Spring in 2018. The Rockville location continues to operate and is family-owned, but no longer associated with the Newmyers.

Armand’s in Rockville has not only stood the test of time in the hearts of locals, but also stood out in the competitive culinary landscape. In January 2021, Armand’s Pizza won Taste MoCo’s tournament of 64 Montgomery County restaurants that offer pizza and the winner of WTOP’s ‘2022 Best Pizza’ list,  a testament to its enduring popularity.

According to Lew Newmyer’s obituary published in The Washington Post, Armand’s inception was almost accidental. On a cold January night, Lew returned to a restaurant after hours to retrieve some uneaten Uno pizza. Armed with a flashlight, he rummaged through a dumpster to salvage the labels from flour, yeast, and tomato packages. This resourceful move led to the discovery of the formula and ingredients that would define Armand’s pizzas for years to come.

While the Newmyer family’s direct involvement in the business has dwindled, the two remaining Armand’s locations continue to honor the original recipes and cooking styles that made the chain a household name. The Rockville location remains a cherished spot for locals who fondly remember the flavors of their childhood, while Armand’s By the Sea offers a taste of nostalgia for beachgoers in Delaware.
