To address spacing needs in the mid-county region, planning and construction was previously approved for the upcoming Crown High School which is scheduled to open in the Fall of 2027. Construction is moving along, with plenty completed but still a lot left to go.
The new high school is expected to reduce populations at Gaithersburg, Northwest, Quince Orchard, Richard Montgomery, and Thomas S. Wootton high schools. The process will begin with a boundary study (proposed timeline available below).
The proposed timeline of the process was approved in the March 19th, 2024 MCPS Board of Education (BoE) meeting. Because elementary schools do not articulate directly to high schools, the Board of Education resolution states “no elementary schools be included in the boundary study.” The 31.7 acre site that is adjacent to Crown Neighborhood Three and is located at the intersection of Fields Road and Omega Drive.
