Brooke Grove Elementary Students Celebrate Washington Capitals’ 50th Anniversary with Special Music Video Project

In a collaborative effort with Monumental Sports and Entertainment, Brooke Grove Elementary School is currently embarking on an exciting project to celebrate the Washington Capitals hockey team’s 50th anniversary. The initiative invited fourth graders to participate in a student-led music video experience, where they would help write a song honoring the team’s historic milestone.

This project is part of a partnership between Monumental Sports and the David Z Foundation’s Medley Music Program. The Medley Music Program has successfully completed similar projects with other public schools, showcasing the creative talents of students. Examples of past programs include “Cultural Mosaic” and “Multiplication,” both available for viewing online.

To ensure a diverse representation of students, Brooke Grove randomly selected 15 fourth graders to participate in this unique experience, contingent upon parental approval. Schedule of events can be seen below:

The project kicked off with a Zoom session on Friday, March 7th, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. During this virtual meeting, students had the opportunity to connect with the music composer and director, gaining insights into the history of the Capitals and starting the songwriting process.

On Wednesday, March 12th, from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM, the selected students will meet in person with the composer and director to continue practicing and rehearsing the song they have developed.

The highlight of the project is scheduled for Thursday, March 13th, when students will embark on a field trip to the Capitals’ practice facility at MedStar Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, VA. Traveling by MCPS bus, the students will perform their original song on the Capitals’ practice ice from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. It’s important to note that students will not be wearing ice skates during their performance.
