Montgomery County Man Charged Following High-Speed Pursuit of Stolen Vehicle in Talbot County

The Talbot County Sheriff’s Office shared in a March 15th news release that it has identified and charged 25-year-old Matthew Luis Rocha Gonzalez of Olney, Maryland, in connection with a high-speed vehicle pursuit that took place on January 8, 2025. The pursuit was initiated after a vehicle was reported stolen from Cambridge, Maryland.

According to the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office, “on the morning of January 8, deputies from the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office were alerted by the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office about the theft of a 2011 Volkswagen sedan. Using the information provided, deputies located the stolen vehicle in Easton, Maryland, specifically at the intersection of westbound Ocean Gateway and Dutchman’s Lane.

When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle and contact the driver, the suspect refused to comply and fled at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The pursuit involved reckless driving maneuvers, including aggressive lane changes, disobeying traffic signals, and excessive speeding, continuing westbound on Ocean Gateway and into Cordova, Maryland. The pursuit was ultimately terminated at the Talbot County and Queen Anne’s County line for public safety reasons, with neighboring law enforcement agencies promptly notified.

During the course of the pursuit, the suspect struck an uninvolved civilian vehicle in Easton, although there were no reported injuries and the damage was minor.

Following a thorough investigation conducted throughout January and February 2025, the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office, with support from the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, identified the suspect as 25-year-old Matthew Luis Rocha Gonzalez, a resident of Olney, Maryland, in Montgomery County.

On February 28, 2025, deputies filed multiple criminal and traffic-related charges against Gonzalez through the Talbot County District Court Commissioner’s Office. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued for Gonzalez on the following charges:

– Obstructing and Hindering a Police Officer
– Possession of a Stolen Vehicle
– Driving on a Suspended License
– Fleeing and Eluding a Police Officer
– Reckless Driving
– Hit and Run
– Numerous other traffic offenses related to the pursuit

Gonzalez is currently incarcerated in the Montgomery County Detention Center for unrelated charges. The Talbot County Sheriff’s Office is forwarding this arrest warrant to the Montgomery County Detention Center for service, pending a court date in Talbot County District Court.”
