K2 Cafe’s Himalayan Flair Draws Lunch Lines Out the Door Daily

If you find yourself in Poolesville, MD, and notice a line snaking out the door at K2 Cafe, don’t be surprised. This thriving establishment, opened by husband-and-wife team Ashar Abbasi and Nichole Hodges-Abbasi, has quickly become a local favorite, attracting hungry patrons with its unique blend of American cuisine infused with Himalayan flair. A brief video of the experience is available below.

Remarkably, even during high school lunch hours– when nearby fast-food options like McDonald’s are just a couple of blocks away– many students eagerly choose K2 Cafe, clamoring for favorites like the Tandoori Chicken bowl, the Himalayan chai, and even the irresistible chocolate chip cookies. This enthusiastic demand showcases not only the cafe’s unique offerings, but also its ability to capture the hearts and appetites of the local youth who eagerly recommended the cafe to our very own Mr. MoCo while he was speaking to classes at the local high school.

Located at 17610 W Willard Rd, K2 Cafe offers an eclectic menu that features delicious bowls, wraps, and specialty coffee drinks– think Starbucks meets Chipotle, with a flavorful Himalayan twist. The couple, who opened the cafe in 2021 with little more than pandemic stimulus money, has cultivated a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects their journey and the rich cultural tapestry of their backgrounds.

The story of Ashar and Nichole is as captivating as the food they serve. Their journey began with a chance encounter in a Washington, D.C. cab in 2003, where Nichole, determined not to be overcharged, discovered not only an honest driver in Asher but also a lifelong partner. Hailing from a small town in upstate New York and a bustling city in Pakistan, the couple’s diverse backgrounds have shaped their approach to both life and business.

Ashar and Nichole have lived in the D.C. area throughout their adult lives, finally settling in Montgomery County in 2019. Their roots in the community strengthened their resolve to start a business, and they couldn’t be prouder of what K2 has become. The couple often reflects on the serendipitous moments that brought them together and the beautiful lives they’ve built since then.

K2 Cafe has quickly established itself as a major hub for cyclists on weekends and a favorite spot for students from Poolesville High School. The cafe’s welcoming ambiance and delicious offerings keep customers coming back for more, with lunch lines frequently extending outside the door.

Nichole, who has a long history of teaching in Montgomery County Public Schools, has transitioned to a part-time role to focus on the cafe and their growing family. With two boys currently attending Poolesville High School, the couple feels that their decision to settle in this tight-knit community has been the best move for their family.

At K2, the menu is a celebration of both Ashar and Nichole’s cultural heritage. Each dish is infused with the flavors and culinary traditions of their backgrounds, creating a unique dining experience that honors their roots. The decor reflects their journey, combining elements that make the cafe feel both special and familiar. “We wanted K2 to be a place where everyone feels at home,” Ashar explains. “It’s about you, our customers, and the community we serve.”

As they look ahead, Ashar and Nichole are excited about the growth of their business. They have plans to open a second location within the next year or two, fueled by the overwhelming support they’ve received from the Montgomery County community. “We started with close to nothing, but our passion and dedication to providing a good product have helped us weather the storm,” Nichole shares. “Good things grow in MoCo, and we’re grateful for the journey.”
