Iconic Arby’s Has Closed Permanently After More Than 50 Years

The Arby’s restaurant located at 225 Gorman Ave in Laurel has permanently closed its doors. A notice on the door directs customers to the Jessup location at 7410 Assateague Drive.

This particular Arby’s was deemed “iconic” for its large hat sign, which has stood in front of the restaurant for over 50 years. As of Saturday, March 22, the “Arby’s” portion of the sign has been removed.

A nearby Arby’s in Beltsville has been closed for several months but remains listed on the Arby’s website, suggesting it may be temporarily closed for renovations. The site currently lists 39 Arby’s locations across Maryland, with the nearest to Montgomery County located in Ellicott City, Frederick, Mount Airy, and Upper Marlboro.

Montgomery County’s last remaining Arby’s, situated at 11710 Rockville Pike, closed in May 2021. After negotiations to bring Shake Shack to the site fell through, the location remained vacant for a couple of years. However, McDonald’s has recently decided to relocate its nearby store at 11564 Rockville Pike to this location, with renovations underway and an anticipated opening in the coming months.
