The Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council will hold a public hearing to consider proposed permit program parking regulations, including the City’s residential and commercial permit parking programs. City residents, businesses, and stakeholders are invited to provide input on the proposed changes, which aim to improve parking availability, accessibility, and overall traffic management. The public hearing will take place during the regular Mayor and City Council meeting on April 7, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at 16 S. Summit Ave.
According to the City of Gaithersburg: “The proposed parking regulations aim to alleviate, to the extent possible, existing conditions related to parking on certain City streets and City-regulated parking facilities including, but not limited to inadequate parking availability, potential hazardous traffic conditions, overburdening of City streets, air and noise pollution, pedestrian safety concerns, and interference with the use and enjoyment of private property.
The new parking regulations seek to mitigate these issues by establishing a modernized permit parking program that: 1) integrates existing permit parking initiatives and facilities into one consolidated program; 2) establishes a comprehensive, organized, and modifiable permit parking framework to accommodate the City’s growing population; and 3) provides a process and procedure for the establishment of parking districts, zones and sectors, and the issuance of parking permits in a manner that promotes equity, safety, practicality, and feasibility.
Please note that all permit parking zones and programs established prior to the adoption of these regulations will be automatically adopted into the permit parking program framework and will not be subject to the criteria and processes required for establishing a new parking zone or sector. Previously approved zones and parking programs will be subject to the criteria and processes required for modifying or discontinuing a parking zone or sector, applicable permit fees, and conditions pertinent to individual parking permits.
The draft permit parking regulation can be reviewed here. Please note that the permit parking regulations posted at the link above are a draft of the regulations that were introduced to the Mayor and City Council on March 3, 2025, and these are subject to change prior to final adoption.
