DICK’S Sporting Goods at 2 Grand Corner in Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront is transforming into a DICK’S House of Sport– a concept designed to deliver a completely immersive experience for shoppers.
The new House of Sport model will feature amenities such as rock climbing walls, indoor tracks, and simulated driving ranges that set it apart from traditional sporting goods stores. Maryland Newsletters reported that DICK’S received a permit for a $10.2 million renovation. Management shared with The MoCoShow that the renovation will consist of a conversion to a House of Sport concept which is scheduled to be completed at some point in 2026, with the store remaining open throughout the transition.
“Compared to a typical Dick’s store, athletes are traveling farther to visit House of Sport, increasing the time they spend in the store and visiting more frequently,” DICK’S CEO Lauren Hobart said during an earnings call last year. DICK’S Sporting Goods currently has approximately 20 House of Sport store and anticipates opening 75 to 100 House of Sport stores by 2027.
When the store first opened at Rio in the late 90s, it was a Galyan’s sporting goods store. Many of the Galyan’s stores, including the Rio location, featured rock climbing walls, golf simulators, and archery ranges. DICK’S acquired Galyan’s and its 47 stores nationwide back in 2004.
