Safeway Closes Permanently

Safeway has officially closed its store at 1800 Rockville Pike, located on the ground level of the Galvan at Twinbrook complex. The store ceased operations sometime last week, and signage has now been removed.

When it opened, this location was intended to replace two nearby Safeway stores: the Loehmann’s Plaza on Randolph Road and the Twinbrook Center on Veirs Mill Road. Originally scheduled to close in April, it ended up shutting its doors slightly earlier than planned.

The decision to close may have been influenced by the upcoming opening of a Wegmans store less than half a mile away this June. Safeway still operates additional locations in Rockville, including those at the Rock Creek Village shopping center on Norbeck Road, the Fallsgrove Village Center on Shady Grove Road, and on Redland Boulevard in the King Farm Development.

In February, we let you know that Go Fresh 365, which describes itself as a “Chinese/Asian supermarket chain,” has been named as the Safeway replacement in an email sent to residents by management of the Galvan at Twinbrook. With Safeway closed, construction on the upcoming grocery store could begin soon. Additional information here.
