Navin P. Kumar, an alumnus of Dufief Elementary School, Frost Middle School, and Wootton High School here in Montgomery County, shares his personal journey as a testament to overcoming life’s challenges. Recognized as history’s first athlete to actively compete with Parkinson’s Disease at the Olympic and Para levels, Kumar has navigated numerous obstacles from a very early age.
Born with an extremely rare congenital heart condition, Kumar has undergone 24 heart surgeries, including receiving a partial mechanical heart and a defibrillator-pacemaker. Distinguishing his experience of ventricular fibrillation from a heart attack, he suffered cardiac arrest on December 25, 2022, and was clinically dead for 10 minutes. His revival was achieved through nonstop CPR performed by his brother and eight shocks administered by Montgomery County EMTs, an effort that placed him among the 5% of cardiac arrest survivors worldwide with no permanent brain damage. Kumar and his rescuers were honored by the county for saving his life.
Kumar’s life has been marked by constant change, both externally and internally, molding his positive attitude and deep love for life. These experiences have also fueled his determination to face challenges, including managing Parkinson’s Disease.
In sports, Kumar has made significant strides in table tennis. In December 2018, he won two bronze medals for the USA at the US Open Championships in Orlando, Florida—his first international medals. This accomplishment made him the first-ever medalist with both young onset Parkinson’s Disease and Congenital Heart Disease. In October 2019, he represented the USA at the inaugural World Table Tennis Championships for Parkinson’s in Pleasantville, New York, winning a silver medal in doubles and a bronze medal in singles. He further achieved a milestone by winning his first gold medal at the USA National Table Tennis Championships in 2022.
Kumar has also pursued a career in film. He made his acting debut in “Attack of the Unknown” (2020), where he also served as Executive Producer; the film was released worldwide on August 28, 2020. He later portrayed the vampire “Damian” in “Bloodthirst,” which was released on October 25, 2022, and he is part of the cast in “Wild West Marshals,” playing Dr. Macon, a cowboy doctor in the old American Wild West.
Through his accomplishments in sports, film, music, and motivational speaking, Navin P. Kumar demonstrates that a positive attitude and perseverance can enable change and help overcome even the most daunting challenges.
