The Oldest and Longest Running Magnet Program Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

The Visual Art Center (VAC) at Albert Einstein High School will celebrate its 50th anniversary on Friday, May 16, in conjunction with its annual art show at the school.

The event will begin with a meet and greet from 5 to 6 p.m. featuring VAC historian and former VAC art teacher Jane Walsh. This will be followed by an art show and alumni celebration from 6 to 8 p.m.

The MCPS Visual Art Center is the oldest and longest-running magnet program in the county. A nationally recognized portfolio preparation program at the Honors-AP level, the VAC is a pre-college art portfolio development initiative serving students across the county. Since its founding in 1974, the program has had just seven teachers in its 50-year history.

Fun Fact: Notable alumni Rebecca Sugar, creator of the critically acclaimed animated series Steven Universe, once attended the Visual Art Center. Sugar’s innovative work in animation and storytelling underscores the enduring impact of the VAC on nurturing creative talent.
