On Monday, April 14, Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS), located at 16923 Norwood Rd in Sandy Spring, MD, announced its intention to close following the conclusion of the 2024-25 school year. However, members of the “Friends of Sandy Spring” coalition, including alumna Bonnie Imlay (SSFS Class of 2003), have pledged $15 million to save the school.
Operating since 1961, SSFS has stated that it requires an additional $14–$16 million over the next three years to remain viable long-term. This funding is needed to cover operating losses, debt service, repayment of a near-term loan, and major maintenance projects. The coalition has also outlined plans to establish an endowment to secure ongoing school funds beyond the initial three-year period.
Bonnie Imlay confirmed that the $15 million pledge is fully backed and pending approval by the SSFS board. “We are thrilled to have the support of both the school community and the broader community,” Imlay said. “It means so much to us—we don’t want to see the school disappear.” It remains to be seen whether the school board will ultimately accept the coalition’s proposal.
