Peter’s Carryout, located at 8017 Wisconsin Ave., has been a Bethesda staple for decades, celebrated for serving what many call Bethesda’s best steak and cheese. Having been established in the 1980s and owned by Ned Saah since 1991, the restaurant remains a family-run business with Ned and his son Tyler at the helm (video below courtesy of TasteMoCo)
Before we tell you more, let’s discuss the difference between a steak and cheese and a Philly cheesesteak. Traditionally, it’s made with thinly sliced ribeye steak, melted cheese (typically Cheez Whiz, provolone, or American cheese), and sautéed onions. In contrast, the term “steak and cheese” can cover a variety of preparations– including different cuts of steak, additional toppings, and even variations like lettuce, tomato, or a touch of mayonnaise, as sometimes seen here in Maryland. Purists reserve the term “Philly cheesesteak” for the classic, unadorned version.
Regulars affectionately refer to Ned as “Peter”– a nod to the restaurant’s original name, which he has proudly maintained. Ned and Tyler are known for their personal touch, often asking customers, “You having your usual today?” Along with their acclaimed steak and cheese, Peter’s Carryout offers a reasonably priced menu featuring a variety of sandwiches, burgers, and other comfort foods.
Beyond the food, Peter’s Carryout is committed to the community. The restaurant supports local charities such as Nourishing Bethesda, which aids those facing hunger, and the Big Tree Memorial Fund, which raises money for families affected by cancer. A sign in the window invites you to “take in the atmosphere” at the counter, where you can enjoy views of the grill alongside hundreds of photographs capturing customers over the years.
