Students and Staff To Rally for Clean Air and Safe Classrooms Friday Morning

Students and staff at A. Mario Loiederman Middle School in Silver Spring will hold a peaceful rally on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 7:40 AM. The event is organized to call attention to ongoing health and safety concerns related to sustained mold exposure and issues with the HVAC system (photos available below, shared by event organizers).

Organizers of the rally say that classrooms have experienced visible mold growth, extreme indoor temperatures, and poor air quality. A press release shared by organizers also states that despite numerous maintenance requests, HVAC repairs and mold remediation efforts have been delayed, inconsistent, or insufficient.

Teachers behind the rally shared that on May 13, school officials evacuated the building twice in one day after the HVAC system overheated, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The rally organizers are urging Montgomery County Public Schools leadership to take the following actions:

• Issue a clear, public timeline for a full HVAC system replacement.
• Undertake immediate, professional mold mitigation.
• Implement transparent air quality testing.
• Recognize and address the health impact associated with the environmental conditions.
• Uphold their responsibility to maintain safe and healthy learning conditions.

Organizers have stated that the rally is both a call for accountability and a call for care, reflecting the belief that students and staff deserve clean air and safe classrooms. Media outlets and community members have been invited to attend and offer their support.
