Sherwood High Students Embrace Daily Photo Ritual

At Sherwood High School, a unique tradition has blossomed over the past four years, bringing students together and creating lasting memories. Every day, a group of dedicated students led by Zach Geller and Nick Hammond has gathered at a specific spot in the school– a staircase affectionately dubbed “The DN,” named after the down sign that adorns it. This daily ritual of taking a photo has transformed from a simple idea between two friends into a beloved staple of the school community (photos through the years available below).

The tradition began with just two students, but it has since grown to include a larger group of participants, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared experience. Each day, students gather at The DN to capture a snapshot of their journey through high school, documenting their lives and friendships in real-time. The photos have become a visual diary of their high school years, celebrating the ups and downs of teenage life.

As the school year comes to an end, this tradition takes on special significance. On the last day of school, the students go all out, inviting as many people as possible to join in for a final group photo. Last year, they made headlines by inviting notable figures, including the current Student Member of the Board (SMOB), Praneel Suvarna, and the first-ever MCPS SMOB, David Naimon, to participate in the celebratory photo. This year, the students are excited to continue the tradition and are planning something special– hoping to make the final picture even more memorable.

While the tradition may seem whimsical, it represents something deeper: the connections forged during high school and the memories that will last a lifetime. For these students, The DN has become more than just a staircase; it is a symbol of their shared experiences, friendships, and the bittersweet nature of graduation.

As they prepared for this year’s final photo, the students reflected on the importance of community and the joy of capturing fleeting moments. Through their daily snapshots, they have created a treasure trove of memories that will serve as a reminder of their time at Sherwood High School and the friendships that have defined their high school experience.
