Best Burger in Maryland, According to ChowHound

Chowhound, a website for food aficionados and “anyone who wants to know the absolute best way to prepare a dish and the science behind why that’s so,” has compiled a list of “The Best Burger in Every State.” Maryland’s Abbey Burger was their selection for our great state.

Abbey Burger is a well-known burger joint in Maryland, celebrated for its diverse and adventurous menu that goes beyond traditional beef patties. The original Abbey Burger Bistro location in Federal Hill, Baltimore, first opened its doors in November 2008. Since then, it has expanded to include popular spots in Fells Point, Mt. Washington, and Havre de Grace.

They offer an enticing selection for any palate, ranging from classic Angus beef to exotic meats like camel, kangaroo, and bison, along with delicious homemade vegetarian and vegan options. One of Abbey Burger’s signature features is its “build-your-own-burger” checklist, allowing diners to create their perfect combination from an extensive array of meats, cheeses, toppings, and sauces.

Beyond the impressive burger offerings, Abbey Burger also boasts a wide selection of local and Belgian craft beers, making it a popular destination for beer enthusiasts. In addition to being a go-to for casual dining and sports fans (especially known as a hub for Arsenal soccer supporters in Baltimore), and being recognized by Chowhound, Abbey Burger has also earned recognition by USA Today as Maryland’s lone representative on a list of the best burgers in the country back in 2019.

Chowhound writes, “Unwieldy burger combinations are the name of the game at Abbey. It’s hard to stick to the classics here, with options like an egg-topped “Harry’s Bistro Burger” on an English muffin, a tortilla-based “Burger-Dilla,” and a “Baltimore Burger” topped with Maryland-style crab dip. If you’re looking for an alternative protein, Abbey has you covered with a bison burger with spicy crème fraîche, a homemade veggie burger with goat cheese and herb yogurt, and a Beyond Burger with hot-pepper spread on a wheat bun.
