The History of Woodfield Elementary School

Woodfield Elementary School in Gaithersburg (near Damascus) boasts a rich and varied history dating back to 1865. Currently, students attending Woodfield Elementary School typically go on to John T. Baker Middle School and Damascus High School.

According to the Woodfield Elementary School website, the very first iteration of the school was a one-room schoolhouse known as Duvalls School, located near the intersection of Sweepstakes Road and Woodfield Road. After fire damage in 1884, the school moved to its second location, where the current school building now stands. This new school, also a one-room structure, opened in 1884.

The school’s third location was established in 1920 with a new building at the northern corner of Woodfield School Road and Woodfield Road. This new building initially had one room, accommodating students from first through seventh grades. A second room was added in 1928. However, due to declining enrollment, Woodfield School was closed and dismantled in 1935, with students being transported to Damascus Elementary School.

The current Woodfield Elementary School, and home of the Eagles, was built and opened in 1962– returning to the second school site. This new building started with eight classrooms and a capacity of 240 students, notably being the first all-electric school in the nation. Its growth continued with the addition of six more rooms and a library in 1967, increasing capacity to 380 students. The school underwent a major remodeling and expansion in 1984, further enhancing its facilities.

Today, Woodfield Elementary serves over 300 students from diverse backgrounds, with twenty-three classrooms, a media center, computer lab, gymnasium, and an all-purpose room, increasing its capacity to 538 students.
