On Friday afternoon, a tractor trailer carrying food products veered off-road and crashed into trees on the outer loop of I-495, between Georgia Avenue and Connecticut Avenue in Kensington.
The incident occurred on the ramp to Connecticut Avenue, causing a fuel leak and prompting a response from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS). Chief spokesperson Pete Piringer reported that MCFRS’s Emergency Medical and Integrated Healthcare Services (EMIHS) were on scene evaluating two patients. Additionally, MCFRS’s Hazardous Materials Unit was called in to manage the fuel spill. Units A716, T726, PE707, and HM728 were present to assist with the situation.
In a later update, Piringer noted that the tractor trailer had gone down an embankment off the right side of the road. The HazMat team was actively working on a “pump-off” of the fuel tank to mitigate the spill. Some lanes on the ramp remain blocked due to the ongoing response efforts.
Motorists are advised to expect delays and consider alternative routes while emergency services work to clear the scene and ensure safety.
