Pollo Campero to Open July 9

Pollo Campero is scheduled to open in the Wheaton Mall food court on Wednesday, July 9. The restaurant is located in the space previously occupied by Moe’s Southwest Grill.

The fast-casual chain’s menu features a mix of Latin-inspired favorites, including fried and grilled chicken, empanadas, yuca fries, sweet plantains, and flan.

Several other food court additions are also on the way at Wheaton Mall:

  • Five Guys has begun construction in the former Sydney’s Burgers location. The D.C.-area staple is known for its hand-formed burgers and fresh-cut fries cooked in peanut oil. The chain currently operates over 1,800 locations worldwide, including several in Montgomery County: Bethesda, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Olney, Potomac, Rockville, and Silver Spring.

  • Popeyes is expected to reopen soon under new ownership following a remodel that began in April 2024. The updated location will remain in the mall’s food court. Popeyes also operates in Gaithersburg, Germantown, Olney, Rockville, Silver Spring, and Wheaton.

  • Burger King is also returning to the food court, taking over the former McDonald’s space, which closed in January.

  • FingerLicking SoulFood, a Jamaican-style restaurant that started as a Frederick County food truck in 2015, is joining the lineup. Known for soulful Southern fare, its menu includes Jamaican-style oxtails, blackened salmon, fried catfish, jumbo shrimp, pork chops, wings, and a range of classic sides like cornbread, mac and cheese, collard greens, and banana pudding. An opening date has not yet been announced.

The fried chicken chain, which originated in Guatemala, opened its first location in 1971 and has grown to over 400 locations worldwide, including over 70 in the United States. Pollo Campero also operates locations in Bethesda (Montgomery Mall), Gaithersburg, Takoma Park, and elsewhere in Wheaton.
