Asif “Trey” Rahman’s Post-Layoff Pivot to “The Burger Coach”

For nearly three decades, Asif “Trey” Rahman, a familiar name in Rockville and now Potomac, dedicated his career to public service in the Department of Defense while passionately shaping young athletes’ lives on the basketball court. However, a significant turning point arrived earlier this year when widespread layoffs across the federal government led to Rahman’s unexpected departure from his long-held government position. This challenge, rather than a setback, ignited a career pivot, transforming a beloved weekend hobby into The Burger Coach, a community-focused culinary venture.

Rahman, known for his extensive work with girls’ basketball teams across the DMV area– including coaching his own daughters also founded The Coach Creative, a platform for mental performance coaching and skills training for athletes. His coaching portfolio includes nationally competitive AAU teams like the Under Armour 6th Man Warriors and Adidas Maryland Shooting Stars. His influence stretches globally, having reached players and coaches in South America, Asia, and the Middle East.

The layoff provided the catalyst for Rahman to channel his lifelong passion for coaching and community engagement into an entirely new arena…food. What began as a self-proclaimed foodie’s weekend delight, experimenting with fresh, hand-formed patties and house-made sauces for friends and family, swiftly evolved into a full-fledged family business. This unexpected professional shift became an opportunity for Rahman to build an enterprise deeply rooted in the community he cherishes.

The Burger Coach isn’t your typical food truck; it’s a catering operation delivering a premium, personalized culinary experience. Rahman, alongside his family, brings their fresh burgers and signature sauces to private events across Montgomery County. From lively birthday parties and competitive youth tournaments to festive neighborhood cookouts and elegant weddings, The Burger Coach has quickly become a local favorite, with a growing buzz around the highly anticipated bottling of Rahman’s unique sauces.

What truly distinguishes The Burger Coach is its unwavering commitment to giving back. A significant portion of the earnings is dedicated to supporting youth sports initiatives and both local and global nonprofits. Rahman actively volunteers his time coaching in rural villages in Bangladesh, Colombia, and Saudi Arabia, and extends his reach to conflict-affected areas in the Middle East and Europe. His deep involvement in the DMV community persists through continued support for local teams and mentoring young athletes.

Beyond his work with local girls’ basketball leagues, Rahman collaborates with diverse organizations such as the World Basketball Alliance, The Center for Non Violence (DMV), ICCP (Potomac), Bangladesh Empowered, The Growing Up Club, Desi Ballers (Bangladesh), and various basketball programs in Colombia.

It’s a venture where his love for food seamlessly blends with his enduring mission of supporting youth through sports and community engagement. To follow his journey and witness his continued impact, both on the court and in the kitchen, you can find him on Instagram at @the.burger.coach.
