Maddox Cherry, a rising junior at Clarksburg High School, recently achieved a significant milestone in his aviation journey. He was one of just 24 students nationwide selected to participate in the esteemed Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) Lt. Col Luke Weathers Solo Flight Academy in Olive Branch, Mississippi.
During this unique and competitive program, Maddox underwent rigorous preparation, including ground instruction, simulation experiences, and hands-on flight training. His dedication and hard work paid off when he successfully completed the program, passing challenging examinations and in-flight evaluations. On the final day, Maddox achieved the remarkable feat of flying solo.
To commemorate this significant achievement, Maddox participated in the traditional post-solo celebration– an ice-cold bucket dump, symbolizing his successful flight. This learning experience marks a major step toward Maddox’s dream of becoming a pilot. The photos shared from his journey, including moments from his solo flight, capture the excitement and dedication of a young aviator on the rise. (Photo Credit: OBAP and LWFA for select images)
