R.L. Stine, born Robert Lawrence Stine in Columbus, Ohio, is a prolific American novelist best known for his horror fiction for children and young adults. He’s often referred to as the “Stephen King of children’s literature” and has written hundreds of books, with more than 400 million copies sold globally.

Stine didn’t start in horror. He initially wrote humor books for children under the name “Jovial Bob Stine” and created the teen humor magazine Bananas while working at Scholastic. His first horror novel for young adults, Blind Date, was published in 1986 and was a bestseller. This led to the creation of the Fear Street series in 1989.

Stine’s most famous work is the Goosebumps series, which began in 1992. The series became a worldwide phenomenon, leading to TV adaptations, spin-off book series, and feature films. He intentionally kept the books fantastical and avoided blood, using humor to balance the frightening elements.
