Starting Thursday, Aug. 28, Amtrak’s new NextGen Acela will begin service on the Northeast Corridor, revolutionizing the travel experience between Washington, D.C. and New York City, cutting the trip down to approximately 2.5 hours. The new fleet of high-speed trains promises a more comfortable, connected, and efficient journey for travelers.
The NextGen Acela will initially operate alongside the current Acela fleet before fully transitioning into service by 2027. While the current Acela can make the trip from Washington, D.C. to New York City in as little as 2 hours and 47 minutes, the new NextGen trains are expected to shave off approximately 15 to 20 minutes from the journey time. This will reduce travel time to around 2 hours and 30 minutes, making it an even more appealing option for business commuters and tourists alike.
According to Amtrak, the new trains are designed to offer a superior onboard experience, with features that cater to the needs of modern travelers. They will provide free, high-speed 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, individual power outlets, and reading lights at every seat. These amenities are specifically included to help passengers stay productive and connected while on the go.
The launch on August 28th marks the beginning of a phased rollout. Five new NextGen Acela trains will enter service initially, with the full fleet of 28 trains expected to be in operation by 2027. This expansion will lead to a 27% increase in seats per departure and an expanded schedule of both weekday and weekend services, giving travelers more flexibility and greater opportunities to book their trips.
The trains were assembled at a facility in Hornell, NY, using components from over 180 suppliers across 29 states, a project that created an estimated 15,000 U.S. jobs. This initiative is a core part of Amtrak’s effort to not only improve its service but also to invest in American manufacturing and labor.
