Last month we let you know that beloved Hong Kong-style dim sum and Chinese cuisine, Hollywood East Cafe will be closing its doors on August 24, 2025 after nearly three decades of serving the Wheaton, MD community. Eater DC has included the upcoming closing in its list of “Saddest DC-Area Restaurant Closings.”
Since its founding in 1996 by the Yu family, the restaurant has been a cherished local establishment, known for its rolling dim sum carts, pan-fried dumplings, and crispy shredded beef– dishes that have become synonymous with shared memories for many patrons.
As the lease for the beloved restaurant comes to an end, the Yu family is taking this opportunity to reflect on an incredible journey filled with community, culture, and cuisine. “Thank you for 29 amazing years,” the family expressed, acknowledging the loyal customers who have made Hollywood East Cafe feel like home over the years.
Fans of the restaurant are encouraged to visit before the closing date to enjoy their favorite dishes and say goodbye to a neighborhood staple. Despite the closure, the Yu family’s culinary story is far from over, with exciting new ventures on the horizon. Janet Yu will expand “Grannie Yu’s,” offering beloved products like chili oil, dumpling sauce, and almond cookies. Timothy Yu plans to continue hosting pop-up events with “Red Thread Table” and provide private catering services featuring Hong Kong-inspired cuisine. Corey Yu is embarking on a new adventure, with more details to come.
