MCASAC to Offer Free Adoptions August 23-24

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) is participating in a national “Clear the Shelters” event this weekend, offering free adoptions for all pets on Saturday, August 23rd, and Sunday, August 24th, from 11am to 5pm at its location at 7315 Muncaster Mill Rd. in Derwood.

The shelter expects a large turnout and is taking measures to ensure a smooth adoption process. To manage crowds and wait times, all potential adopters must reserve a time slot online. The scheduling links for dogs, cats, and other pets (including rabbits, birds, and reptiles) went live on Sunday, August 17th. You must book your appointment ahead of time, as late arrivals may not be accommodated.

Before your scheduled appointment, you can walk around the shelter to choose up to two animals you’d like to meet. During your appointment, you’ll have either 15 minutes to meet two cats or small animals, or 25 minutes to meet two dogs. An adoption counselor will then go over the pet’s medical and behavioral history with you. It’s important to be prepared to take your new pet home that day, so be sure to bring a government-issued photo ID and a carrier or leash/collar.

For a smoother experience, you can view the adoptable animals online before you go. Remember to make only one appointment per household, and if you can’t make it, be sure to cancel to allow others to reserve the spot.
