A new brewpub has arrived in Gaithersburg with Mayan Monkey Brewing Co. now officially brewing their own beers. The new concept from the team behind local favorites like Taco Bar El Guero, Ixtapalapa, and La Gula Mexicana opened at 227 E. Diamond Ave, the former longtime home of Growlers, last year.
Earlier this summer, the brewery began its on-site operations and now has 12 of its own creations on tap. The beer program is led by brewer Matt Furda, who has a background in chemical engineering and previously worked at Landmade Brewing. Furda, who refers to all the beers as his “babies,” is a perfectionist dedicated to continuous improvement and hopes to get people excited about beer again. He lists the “De Lujo” as a personal favorite, but the current best-seller is “Chula,” Mayan Monkey’s take on a Mexican lager.
The new brewpub is the largest kitchen among the family’s four restaurants, allowing for an expanded menu that creatively blends Mexican and American cuisines. Diners can find a wide variety of food options, including classic cheese curds, pretzels, and burgers alongside authentic gorditas, tacos, and wings.
The space itself is designed for both dining and entertainment, with live music planned for the upstairs area and a full-service dining room on the main floor. The beer list includes Mismo (Hazy IPA), Chula (Mexican lager), Sunborn (West Coast IPA), Opaco (Hazy IPA), De Lujo (Deluxe lager), Bodega Ambar (Amber Kellerbier), El Mateo (Hazy Pale Ale), Yax (Extra Hoppy Wild Ale), Lupa (Cold IPA), Raku (Rice lager), La Lumbre (Smoked Helles), and Jag (Nitro stout). In addition to beer, the brewery offers an extensive wine list and cocktail menu.
