MCPS Girls’ Flag Football Teams Shine Bright on Monday Night Football Stage

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Girls’ Flag Football teams experienced an unforgettable moment this week as they were celebrated during ESPN’s Monday Night Football broadcast of the Commanders/Bengals game. A post on the official MCPS Athletics X account proudly declared, “@MCPS Girls’ Flag 🏈 teams RAISEd Hail on Monday Night Football! So proud of our student-athletes and coaches for shining bright on the national stage! Season 2 is gonna be 🔥🔥🔥.”

The emergence of girls’ flag football in MCPS has been a welcomed addition to the county’s athletic landscape. Spearheaded by the collaborative efforts of MCPS Athletics and the Washington Commanders, the league provides female student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in a fast-paced and engaging sport, fostering teamwork, athleticism, and leadership skills. The inaugural season saw enthusiastic participation from high schools across the county, with teams showcasing impressive talent and sportsmanship.

The Washington Commanders have played a crucial role in the establishment and growth of the MCPS Girls’ Flag Football league. Recognizing the increasing popularity of the sport and the desire for more opportunities for female athletes, the Commanders partnered with MCPS to provide resources, support, and visibility to the league. This partnership has included equipment donations, coaching clinics, and, most notably, the opportunity for the student-athletes to be recognized on a national platform like Monday Night Football. Student athletes from Paint Branch, Wheaton, Seneca Valley, and Walter Johnson participated in the halftime matchups.
