Weller Road Elementary’s “Back to School Free Cuts” Event Fosters Confidence and Community (Monday, August 25th)

As the new school year approaches, students at Weller Road Elementary (Silver Spring/Wheaton-Glenmont) are not only preparing their backpacks and school supplies but also getting a fresh start with a sharp new look. The school is hosting its “Back to School Free Cuts” event on Monday, August 25th from 1:30pm-4pm a now-annual tradition that provides free haircuts to students and children in the community.

The initiative was the brainchild of Gary Lyst, a P.E. teacher at Weller Road Elementary with 19 years of experience at the school. Lyst, who spent 15 years teaching Kindergarten and Pre-K before transitioning to P.E., has always sought ways to support students beyond the academic curriculum. The event’s origins trace back to the school’s annual carnival, where Lyst, along with barbers Dennis Gutierrez and Rigo from Cut Culture, volunteered their time and affords and provides a few free haircuts. The idea was simple, but its impact was immediately clear.

With the crucial support of Catherine Carpela-Schulman, Weller Road’s Community School Liaison, the free haircuts were spun off into their own dedicated event, held alongside the school’s Open House for families. Carpela-Schulman, who has served Weller Road for 16 years, has been instrumental in growing the initiative. “Each year the turnout has grown,” Lyst said, reflecting on the event’s evolution. “Last year we welcomed eight barbers and stylists, including those who provided haircuts for girls.”

The event’s success is a testament to the generosity of the local community. A special shout-out was given to Rigo and Toren of Cut Culture in Rockville, who have consistently shown up with their team to ensure kids begin the school year “looking sharp and feeling confident.” This year’s event welcomed a new group of talented volunteers, including Cheryl Duelley, Abby Morganstein, Maggie Kassimis, Grazia Fiorentino, Rosa Brandon, and Lyst’s own mother.

Beyond the free haircuts, Lyst and Carpela-Schulman have championed other community-building programs, such as an afterschool flag football initiative. These efforts underscore their shared philosophy of fostering a supportive environment that extends beyond the classroom walls. The simple act of providing a haircut has had a profound effect on the young recipients. The smiles on the children’s faces, and their parents’, after each haircut reflect the immediate boost in pride and confidence. For Lyst, this feeling is the driving force behind the event.

Looking to the future, Lyst hopes to see the program expand beyond Weller Road Elementary. “My goal is to expand this initiative beyond Weller Road ES, inspiring schools across MCPS to join in creating these uplifting moments for students and families,” he said. The Weller Road Elementary “Back to School Free Cuts” event stands as a shining example of how a simple idea, fueled by community spirit and a passion for student well-being, can make a lasting difference.
