9:02am Update: All lanes of southbound I-270 prior to Watkins Mill Rd have reopened. Expect residual delays.
A significant traffic incident occurred on southbound Interstate 270 between Watkins Mill Road and Montgomery Village Avenue early this morning. At approximately 6:57am, Pete Piringer, the Chief spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS), reported a collision involving five vehicles.
The incident has majorly impacted the morning commute on the first day of school for MCPS. Alert Montgomery notified at 7:26 am that three left lanes of southbound I-270 are closed due to the collision, advising motorists to expect significant delays and to seek alternative routes if possible.
MCFRS: “SB I270 between Watkins Mill Road and Montgomery Village Avenue, collision, involves five (5) vehicles.”
