After seven years of waking up with viewers across the D.C. region, WUSA9 anchor Annie Yu is signing off from the morning desk and preparing to take on a new role with the station’s noon and 4pm newscasts.
Yu announced the change in a heartfelt message to viewers, calling the move “a little bittersweet” after years of working overnight and early morning hours.
“It’s been such a gift to be part of your mornings to share your first cup of coffee, to help you start your day,” Yu said. “I’m so grateful for the viewers who trust us, and for this team — my friends — that have made these overnight hours easier. I’ll miss laughing together the most.”
She went on to thank the behind-the-scenes staff who make the show possible, including producers, directors, photographers, and engineers, as well as newsroom custodian Wilmer, who she described as someone who “keeps this place running, often with a smile and a kind word.”
Yu joined WUSA9 in 2018, following more than a decade at FOX 5 DC, where she built a strong reputation as both an anchor and reporter. Throughout her career, she has covered breaking news, local politics, community stories, and features highlighting the people of the Washington region. She is also recognized for her involvement in local causes, particularly those supporting veterans, education, and the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.
Her shift to afternoons will allow her to trade overnight schedules for more family-friendly hours while continuing to bring her signature mix of professionalism and personality to WUSA9 viewers. In her announcement, Yu joked that she was “moving to the moon” as part of the change, a playful nod to the new chapter ahead. But for loyal viewers, she won’t be far away — just on their screens a little later in the day.
“Seven unforgettable years of mornings, and I’ll always carry that with me,” Yu said. “Can’t wait to tune into Get Up DC and catch my friends.”
