2025’s Largest High School in Maryland

Seneca Valley High School, located at 19401 Crystal Rock Dr. in Germantown, MD, is the largest public high school in the state of Maryland. The school first opened its doors in 1974 in its original building. It was constructed on land that formerly belonged to renowned baseball player Walter Johnson, who purchased it in 1935 and resided there with his family until his passing in 1946. Before the opening of Northwest High School in 1998, Seneca Valley was Germantown’s only high school. By 2025, Seneca Valley ranked 16th among the largest high schools in Maryland by enrollment.

During its inaugural 1974-1975 school year, led by Principal Nathan Pearson, the school served grades seven through ten. The following year, it accommodated grades nine through eleven, as eighth graders transitioned to the newly established Ridgeview Junior High School in Gaithersburg, Maryland. By the 1976-1977 academic year, Seneca Valley fully transitioned to a senior high school, offering education for grades ten through twelve, and celebrated the graduation of its first class in June 1977. In 1988, Seneca Valley adopted its current structure as a comprehensive high school for grades nine through twelve. The original building was demolished in 2020, making way for a new facility that opened in 2021.

The new Seneca Valley High School is reported to be between 440,000 and 452,000 square feet, making it the largest high school in Maryland. The structure boasts two primary sections: a four-story academic wing and a two-story public wing. Classrooms within the academic wing encircle two expansive courtyards that provide natural lighting and enable efficient movement within the school. The public wing houses a 900-seat auditorium, athletic facilities, and a dining hall.

Furthermore, the school includes a Career and Technical Education wing offering programs in automotive, construction trades, architectural design, and technical drawing. The building features sustainable elements, such as a vegetated roof system. The campus is equipped with a multi-use turf field stadium, seven tennis courts, four basketball courts, and grass fields for baseball and softball.

In recognition of its design and construction, Seneca Valley High School received an Honorable Mention for the 2022 Excellence in Construction award from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Metro Washington and Virginia, as well as the Architectural and Interior Design Awards of Excellence for Outstanding Project from Learning by Design in 2022.
