Montgomery County Native Mike Morini Releases “Mild PTSD,” a Raw Reckoning with War and Its Aftermath

Gaithersburg native and Watkins Mill High School Class of 2000 graduate Mike Morini has released his debut book, Mild PTSD, an unflinching exploration of the emotional and physical toll of war. Morini, who enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly before the September 11 attacks, draws from his deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan to paint an unvarnished picture of life in combat and its lingering effects.

Morini says he left Montgomery County as a young man in search of adventure, only to find himself immersed in the reality of war. Though he eventually returned home safely to Gaithersburg, he admits that a part of him still feels like it’s “over there.” His book is not a romanticized tale of combat or a clinical exploration of trauma; instead, it’s a deeply personal reckoning with the experiences that shaped him.

The title Mild PTSD carries a heavy irony. While the words suggest restraint, Morini’s writing reveals anything but. His narrative is marked by brutal honesty and vulnerability, capturing the complexity of military service– the fear, camaraderie, moral uncertainty, and enduring sense of duty that define it.

“This book reads exactly like what it is,” Morini noted, “a soldier putting distressing memories to paper without polish or pretense.” Morini’s candid storytelling offers a window into the often-silent struggles veterans face upon returning home, where trauma manifests in ways not always visible to others.

While veterans may see themselves in its pages, Mild PTSD is written for a wider audience: family members, civilians, and even policymakers seeking to understand the invisible costs of modern warfare. By speaking plainly, and at times painfully, Morini delivers a narrative that resonates far beyond the veteran community. The book can be purchased here.
