After nearly nine decades as a trusted local business and community staple, Gaithersburg Rental Center, located at 219 E Diamond Avenue, has announced it will be closing its doors in the coming weeks following the sale of its property.
The business, operated by Robert and Lynne Chiswell, has been part of a family legacy spanning more than eight decades. It began when Robert’s grandfather opened a hardware store 88 years ago, later transitioning under the leadership of Robert’s father, Bill Chiswell, into what would become Gaithersburg Rental Center. Since then, the shop has served countless customers, evolving alongside the community while maintaining a family-run atmosphere.
“For so many years, we’ve been honored to serve this community with our family by our side,” said Robert Chiswell. “We’ve seen Gaithersburg grow, especially Olde Town, and we’ve been through so much together, including navigating a pandemic. The support of our friends, family, and loyal customers has meant everything to us.”
The Chiswells reflected on the bittersweet nature of the decision, noting that while they will miss the “daily hustle” of running a small business, they are eager to focus on other aspects of life that have often taken a back seat to the demands of their shop. Gaithersburg Rental Center has been more than just a business; it has been a cornerstone of the community, helping residents and local organizations with equipment and rental needs while fostering relationships that blurred the lines between customers and family.
The Chiswells invite longtime customers and friends to visit over the next few weeks as they clear out the store and say goodbye to a chapter of local history. “We’re excited about the next chapter,” Chiswell added, “but we’ll miss sharing stories and building connections in this space that has meant so much to our family for generations.”
