Marble Slab Creamery to Close Permanently

Marble Slab Creamery in Rockville will close permanently on Sunday, September 14, according to a representative at the store. The shop is located at 100 Gibbs St., Unit I, in The Square at Rockville (formerly Rockville Town Square). It is Maryland’s only Marble Slab location, as the brand’s store directory lists just one site in the state, in Rockville.

The Rockville store opened in the summer of 2011, part of a wave of new tenants that arrived at Rockville Town Square that year. Marble Slab Creamery is a small-batch ice cream chain founded in 1983 in Houston by Sigmund Penn and Tom LePage and credited with popularizing the frozen-granite “mix-ins on the slab” technique. Today the brand is owned by FAT Brands (parent of Fatburger and Johnny Rockets) and is headquartered in the Atlanta area.

The Rockville shop has long featured the chain’s signature format, house-made ice cream with “always-free” mix-ins, ice cream cakes, hand-spun shakes, and hand-rolled waffle cones. With the Rockville closure, Marble Slab will no longer have a presence in Maryland unless a new franchise opens.
