Starting on or around September 29, Montgomery Parks will begin construction of the Little Falls Parkway project, a Vision Zero safety initiative to enhance bicyclist and pedestrian safety by reducing the total number of vehicular travel lanes and implementing traffic calming measures. Construction is expected to be completed in early December, depending upon weather conditions.
Per Montgomery Parks: Work on the .4-mile portion of Little Falls Parkway will permanently reconfigure the parkway from four lanes to two between Arlington Road and Dorset Avenue. The new configuration will consist of one vehicle travel lane in each direction with a grass median in the middle, and a protected shared-use bicycle/pedestrian path built within one of the former southbound lanes.
Additional safety enhancements include improved signage, relocation of traffic signals, stormwater management, and accessibility improvements.
During construction, the Parkway and the Capital Crescent Trail will remain open. There will be lane shifts, signage, and flaggers at different times to maintain safety and manage traffic. Drivers may experience some delays. Please use caution and follow signage in work areas.
The project, which was approved by the Montgomery County Council in January 2024 and the National Capital Planning Commission in September 2024, will include:
- Removal of unused pavement between Arlington Road and Hillandale Road
- Development of a shared-use path between Arlington Road and the Capital Crescent Trail crossing
- Development of a buffered bike lane in the unused southbound lane from Hillandale Road to Dorset Avenue
- Pavement rehabilitation, drainage improvements, ADA improvements, intersection improvements, traffic signal modifications, and signage upgrades will be incorporated
