Quince Orchard and Stone Bridge, two of the region’s most decorated programs, are set to meet for the third time in as many years. QO owns the first two clashes, but anyone who’s watched knows the margin has been razor-thin. Both contests were decided by defense, field position, and the occasional big play. This time, the Bulldogs may be bringing their most dangerous group yet.
When Kedric Golston took over last season, replacing the legendary Mickey Thompson after a quarter-century of dominance, no one expected perfection. Still, a 4-8 campaign was jarring for a program that measures seasons by deep playoff runs. The defense was championship caliber, but the offense looked like it was still finding the page of the playbook.
Case in point: last year’s clash with QO. The Bulldogs held the Cougars to 10 points, their lowest total of the season, but managed fewer than 50 yards of offense until late in the fourth quarter. It was a script that repeated itself often: suffocating defense, wasted opportunities, and an offense searching for answers.
Fast forward to 2025, and the Bulldogs look nothing like a team coming off a losing season. They’re 3-0, with résumé wins that say more about grit than flash. A 7-0 grinder over Madison. A 7-6 survival test against Dunbar (Baltimore), making SB just the second team to beat the Poets this decade, and the first to do it in the regular season. And most recently, a 35-7 dismantling of John Champe, a team that had been averaging 50-plus points per night.
No, the offense still isn’t vintage Thompson. But it’s improved. Junior quarterback Amir Anglin has taken command of the spread-option look, making smart reads and keeping the chains moving with underneath throws. The Bulldogs spread the rushing load but lack a true home run hitter, which means their scoring often comes methodically, or via a short field created by special teams or defense.
That defense, though, is terrifying. Tennessee-bound Kedric Golston II anchors a front that swallows quarterbacks whole. The secondary is littered with Division I talent: Syracuse commit Chase Geter, UConn commit Xavier Wimbush, and a crop of sophomores who already hold FBS offers. If 2024’s unit made QO sweat, this year’s group looks like a defense that could win a state title on its own.
Quince Orchard, for its part, has been the picture of stability. The Cougars opened with statement wins over Paint Branch and Walter Johnson, torching two playoff-caliber defenses. The surprise? It’s not the ground game carrying the load, it’s quarterback Will Drakeford.
Drakeford has been dazzling as a dual-threat, spreading the ball to a suddenly dangerous receiving corps. Jake Bumgardner has emerged as a red-zone magnet, Rafferty Bankert provides yards after the catch in bunches, and sophomore Isaiah Simms has shown big-play speed, including a long touchdown against Paint Branch. Add in a veteran offensive line, and QO has looked unstoppable… so far. But they haven’t faced a defense like Stone Bridge’s.
The Cougars’ defense remains its usual ferocious self, so points will be at a premium. But if QO wants to win, it will be on Drakeford to stay poised under relentless pressure. He’ll need to avoid forcing throws into a secondary where almost everyone has a Division I future, while still creating plays with his legs when protection breaks down.
This isn’t shaping up to be a fireworks show. It’s more likely to be a war of attrition, with field position, turnovers, and special teams deciding the outcome. Last year, the difference was a single big play; the year before, it was clutch quarterbacking late. History suggests this meeting will follow suit.
Stone Bridge is deeper and more balanced than the version QO saw a year ago, and their defense might be good enough to keep them in any game, against anyone. But QO hasn’t lost a regular-season game since 2018 for a reason, they find ways to make the one or two plays that matter.
Prediction: Expect a slugfest at the Cougar Dome, where every yard will feel like a mile. One special teams play, one turnover, or one gutsy scramble from Drakeford could swing it. Prediction: Quince Orchard 3, Stone Bridge 0. The Cougars’ streak lives on, barely.
