Week 1 gave us some early answers. Week 2 should tell us whether those answers hold up against better competition. Several games this week should give us a clearer picture of the county’s contenders, while others offer teams a chance to establish themselves after uneven or inconclusive opening performances.

Crazy now to think that, this time last year, there was a legitimate argument to be made that Paint Branch might finally catch Quince Orchard at the right moment. The Panthers had reason to believe the Cougars’ standard had slipped just enough.  Then reality hit as Quince Orchard defeated Paint Branch 42-7.

Gaithersburg

For anyone who spent Friday nights at Quince Orchard, the names Aydan and Elisha West still echo like a PA announcement before kickoff. Two Maryland brothers who grew up chasing each other around the CougarDome secondary are now chasing a shared future in the University of Minnesota’s maroon and gold.

There are seasons that blur together, and then there are seasons that leave behind a clear hierarchy, of programs, of players, and of performances that forced everyone else to adjust. This year in Montgomery County football was firmly the latter, and the MoCo All-County Team reflects a fall defined by dominance, adaptability, and elite two-way impact. Maryland

The Class 4A state championship lived up to its billing Friday night as top-ranked Quince Orchard edged Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School 26–21 at Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Our own Damon Anderson was on the sideline providing live updates as the Cougars completed another championship season in dramatic fashion. Photos below by Phil Fabrizio.

If you believe in football karma, if you believe that high school seasons sometimes bend back toward the moments that shaped them, then this state championship matchup feels predestined. The Class 4A/3A – No. 1 Sherwood vs. No. 2 Mergenthaler (Mervo)  takes place on Thursday, December 4th at 7:00pm (Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Annapolis, MD).
