Construction begins this month on the large playground at Greenbriar Local Park (12525 Glen Road in Potomac), which has been closed since a May 2024 fire caused significant damage. Work is expected to continue through mid-November, according to Montgomery Parks.
The blaze, which caused an estimated $1 million in damage, forced the indefinite closure of the playground. The small playground and the rest of the park remain open to visitors during the project. Once complete, the rebuilt playground will restore one of the park’s most popular features, offering families and children in the Potomac area and across the county a renewed space to gather and play.
“We put a lot of effort into creating a safe and enjoyable space for the community, and it’s so sad to see it destroyed,” said Miti Figueredo, Montgomery Parks director, back in May 2024. “Now, instead of moving forward with other projects, we have to prioritize replacing what was lost. It’s a setback for the whole community.”
Park Police continue to seek the public’s assistance in their investigation of the fire. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward by reaching out to the Fire and Explosives Investigations Office at 240-777-2269 or [email protected].
